Common Whirlpool Washer Error Codes

F0E1 – Load Detected During Clean Cycle

This code appears when the washer detects items inside the drum during its automatic self-cleaning cycle—a cycle designed to run on an empty drum.

What you can try: Stop the cycle, remove everything from the drum, and run the clean cycle again with the tub completely empty.

When to call a technician: If the code returns despite an empty drum, the door latch or load sensor is likely faulty. That kind of intermittent fault needs professional diagnosis to confirm which component has failed.

F0E2 – Oversuds

Excess soap or suds have overwhelmed the wash cycle. High-efficiency washers are particularly sensitive to detergent volume—using regular detergent instead of HE-certified product, or simply overpouring, is the most common trigger.

What you can try: Manually drain the washer, then run a rinse cycle without any detergent. For future loads, reduce your detergent amount significantly and confirm you’re using HE-certified detergent. HE washers use far less water than traditional models, so they require proportionally less soap.

When to call a technician: If the code persists even after switching to minimal HE detergent, the suds sensor itself may be malfunctioning and will need testing and possible replacement.

F1E1 – Main Control Failure

This is among the more serious codes a Whirlpool washer can display. The main control board—the unit that coordinates every function in the machine—has detected a fault in its own circuitry, typically indicating a failed electrical component on the board.

What you can try: Unplug the washer for 10 minutes, then restore power. A full power cycle sometimes clears a false reading. If the code reappears immediately, the board needs closer attention.

When to call a technician: In nearly every case. Main control board failures require component-level diagnosis and usually result in board repair or full replacement. This is not a safe or practical DIY repair.

F1E2 – Motor Control Failure

The motor control board has flagged a problem with either the motor itself or its own internal circuitry. The washer will typically fail to spin or agitate correctly.

What you can try: Unplug the washer for 10 minutes and restart. Also check that no item of clothing is jammed between the drum and tub—a stuck garment can place enough strain on the motor to trigger this code.

When to call a technician: If the code returns after a restart with a clear drum, the motor control board or motor needs testing with professional diagnostic equipment.

F2E1 – Stuck Key or Stuck Button

One of the control panel buttons is physically stuck or its underlying sensor is registering continuous input. The washer interprets this as a button being held down indefinitely.

What you can try: Press each button on the control panel firmly, one at a time, to identify any that feel stiff or sluggish. If you locate the problem button, clean carefully around it with a dry cloth. Restart the washer to see if the code clears.

When to call a technician: A button that’s physically stuck or a sensor that won’t respond to cleaning will require replacement of the control panel assembly or touchpad.

F3E1 – Pressure Sensor Failure

The pressure sensor, which tells the washer how much water is in the tub, is not responding correctly. Without an accurate water level reading, the machine can’t manage fill cycles properly.

What you can try: Confirm that both inlet hoses are free of kinks and that water is flowing at normal pressure. Also inspect the air dome—a small internal tube that connects to the pressure sensor—for lint blockages, which can cause false readings. F3E2 – Temperature Sensor Failure

F5E1 – Door Switch Failure

The door latch switch isn’t engaging, or the switch has failed outright. The washer interprets this as an open door and will refuse to start any cycle.

What you can try: Open and firmly close the door—listen for a distinct click from the latch mechanism. Check the door opening for obstructions such as lint buildup, stray fabric, or a slightly misaligned drum that could be preventing the latch from seating fully.

F5E3 – Lid Lock Failure (Top-Load Models)

F7E1 – Motor Speed Failure

The motor is not reaching the correct speed, or the sensor monitoring motor speed has failed. You may notice the drum spinning sluggishly or not spinning at all during the cycle.

What you can try: Check the pump filter and drain lines for lint accumulation. A partially blocked drain forces the motor to work harder than intended, which can trigger speed-related errors. Clean the pump filter if your model provides access to one.

When to call a technician: If the drain is clear and the motor is still running slowly or not at all, both the motor and its speed sensor require professional diagnosis.

F8E1 – Water Supply Error

The washer isn’t receiving adequate water, or the fill sensor can’t detect water entering the tub. The source could be a fill valve problem, a clogged inlet screen, or a sensor fault.

What you can try: Check both the hot and cold inlet hoses for kinks or tight bends. Make sure the supply valves behind the washer are opened fully. Inspect the connection points for leaks. If your fill valve has an inlet screen, remove it and rinse it under running water to clear any mineral sediment—this is a surprisingly common fix.

When to call a technician: If water is flowing freely through clear hoses and the code remains, the fill valve or water level sensor is likely faulty and will need professional replacement.

F9E1 – Drain Failure

The washer isn’t draining, or the drain sensor isn’t detecting that water has left the tub. Standing water in the drum after a cycle is the most visible symptom.

What you can try: Inspect the drain hose for kinks, blockages, or improper installation. The hose should loop into a standpipe or laundry sink at the correct height—if it’s kinked or lying flat on the floor, correct the routing. Clear the pump filter of lint and debris if your model allows access, and run a drain-only cycle to test.

When to call a technician: If the hose is clear and water still won’t drain, the pump or drain valve is likely blocked internally or has failed. Accessing either component requires opening the appliance.

Whirlpool Cabrio-Specific Error Codes

The Whirlpool Cabrio is a top-load platform with its own diagnostic language. Several of its error codes use alphanumeric displays that differ from the F-code system used on other Whirlpool models.

uL – Unbalanced Load

The drum contents aren’t distributed evenly enough for the spin cycle to proceed safely. The Cabrio’s automatic balancing system attempts to correct the imbalance, but stops spinning if it can’t.

What you can try: Pause the cycle, open the lid, and redistribute the laundry by hand. Items like sheets and blankets frequently bunch to one side—separating and spreading them out usually resolves the issue. Restart the cycle once the load is balanced.

uL (Alternate) – Lid Position Fault

On certain Cabrio models, the same uL code can also indicate that the lid isn’t registering as fully closed, even when it appears to be shut.

What you can try: Close the lid firmly, listen for a click, then open and close it again to reset the position sensor. Remove any debris caught between the lid and the tub rim.

Ld – Long Drain

Sd – Suds Detected

Excess suds have been detected inside the tub—the Cabrio equivalent of the F0E2 code on other Whirlpool models. Using too much detergent or a non-HE product is almost always the cause.

What you can try: Cancel the current cycle and manually drain the washer. Run a rinse-only cycle without any detergent to break down the remaining suds. Reduce your detergent quantity for future loads and confirm you’re using an HE-certified formula.
