F0E2 (Oversuds Detected)

What it means: The washer has detected excessive soap or suds in the drum. This typically happens when you use too much detergent, the wrong type of detergent, or add fabric softener incorrectly. Front-load washers are especially sensitive to this because they use significantly less water than top-load models—even a small excess of soap creates a foam problem.

Quick DIY check:

  • Open the door or lid and look inside the drum. Can you see excessive foam or bubbles?
  • If yes, stop the cycle and run a rinse cycle with no detergent to clear the suds.
  • Check your detergent bottle—are you using high-efficiency (HE) detergent? Front-load washers require HE soap specifically.
  • Reduce your detergent amount. Most households use two to three times more than necessary.

When to call us: If you’ve cleared the suds and corrected your detergent routine but the code keeps reappearing, the suds sensor itself may be faulty. We can test and replace it if needed.

F1E1 (Main Control Board Error)

What it means: The washer’s main control board—the computer that coordinates water inlet, motor speed, drain timing, and every other function—has detected a fault. A true F1E1 error typically means the board has shorted out or a wiring connection has failed. This is one of the more serious codes your Maytag can display.

Quick DIY check:

  • Unplug the washer completely and leave it disconnected for 5 minutes, then plug it back in.
  • Run a test cycle to see whether the code returns.
  • If you’re comfortable opening the cabinet, check visible wiring connections for anything loose or unseated—but don’t force anything.

When to call us: In most cases, this one requires a professional. If the error persists after a full reset, the control board likely needs repair or replacement—not a job for DIY troubleshooting.

F3E1 (Pressure Sensor Error)

What it means: The pressure sensor, which monitors water levels and detects internal leaks, has stopped responding correctly. Without an accurate reading from this sensor, the washer can’t fill to the right level or identify a leak inside the tub or hoses.

Quick DIY check:

  • Inspect the two inlet hoses at the back of the washer. Are they kinked, cracked, or showing signs of leaking?
  • Check the drain hose. If it’s inserted too far into the standpipe (the wall drain), backpressure can interfere with pressure readings.
  • If you can safely access the washer’s interior, look for water pooling at the bottom of the cabinet—a clear sign of an active leak.

When to call us: If the hoses look fine and there’s no visible leak, the pressure sensor likely needs replacement. Accessing it requires opening the machine and working with internal components.

F5E1 (Door Latch Error – Front-Load)

What it means: The door latch on your front-load Maytag isn’t engaging or disengaging properly. This motorised component locks the door during the wash cycle to contain water and prevent accidental openings mid-cycle. When it fails, the washer won’t start—or won’t finish.

Quick DIY check:

  • Close the door gently and listen for a distinct clicking sound as the latch engages.
  • After a completed cycle, try opening the door. Does it release cleanly, or does it feel stuck?
  • Visually inspect the latch assembly around the door opening for visible damage, corrosion, or plastic fragments.
  • Clean around the latch area with a damp cloth to clear any detergent residue or debris that might be blocking movement.

When to call us: If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, or if you can see physical damage to the latch assembly, it needs to be replaced with the correct part for your specific model.

F5E3 (Lid Switch Error – Top-Load)

What it means: On top-load models, this code indicates the lid switch—the safety mechanism that detects whether the lid is open or closed—isn’t functioning. The washer won’t start or operate with a faulty lid switch because the safety interlock won’t clear.

Quick DIY check:

  • Close the lid firmly and listen for a click. Does the washer begin its cycle?
  • Open and close the lid several times slowly, paying attention to whether you feel a consistent click at the fully closed position.
  • Notice whether the lid sits differently than it used to—too high or too low when closed can indicate the switch position has shifted.

F7E1 (Motor Error)

What it means: The washer’s motor isn’t running, is running intermittently, or the motor control board is malfunctioning. Since the motor drives drum rotation through every phase—fill, wash, spin, and drain—this error effectively stops the machine from completing any cycle.

  • Confirm the washer is plugged in and the outlet has power (plug in a lamp to test the circuit).
  • Start a cycle and listen carefully. Do you hear humming, buzzing, or grinding from the machine?
  • If the drum won’t turn and the washer is completely silent, the motor has likely failed.
  • If you hear humming but the drum doesn’t spin, the motor coupling—which connects the motor to the drum—may be broken.

When to call us: Motor diagnosis requires professional tools and hands-on access. The fault could be the motor itself, the coupling, or the motor control board, and misidentifying it wastes both time and money.

F8E1 (Water Inlet Valve Error)

What it means: The water inlet valve—the solenoid that opens to allow water into the drum—isn’t responding. A stuck or failed valve means your washer simply won’t fill.

Quick DIY check:

  • Shut off the water supply to the washer using the valves behind the machine.
  • Disconnect the inlet hoses and inspect the small filter screens inside the hose connectors at the back of the washer. Mineral deposits and sediment frequently clog these screens.
  • If the screens look dirty, soak them in white vinegar for an hour to dissolve mineral buildup, then rinse thoroughly and reattach.
  • Turn the water back on and run a fill cycle to check whether water flows normally.

When to call us: If the inlet screens are clean but water still won’t flow, the valve solenoid is faulty and needs replacement. The valve assembly is mounted on the back panel and requires proper disassembly to access safely.

F21 (Slow Drain)

What it means: The washer is taking longer than normal to drain, or it’s not draining at all. This is one of the most frequently reported issues on Maytag front-load models—and the good news is that it’s often fixable without a service call.

Quick DIY check:

  • Check the drain hose for kinks, twists, or sharp bends that could restrict flow.
  • If the hose runs into a standpipe, confirm it’s inserted only 6 to 8 inches into the opening. Inserting it too far creates a siphon effect that slows drainage.
  • Disconnect the drain hose and look inside for lint, hair, or debris. A straightened wire coat hanger can dislodge a clog, or flush the hose with water directly.
  • Check the drain pump filter, typically accessed through a small panel on the front bottom of the washer. Unscrew the cylindrical filter and clear any accumulated debris.

When to call us: If the hose is clear and the filter is clean but drainage is still slow or absent, the drain pump has likely failed, or there’s a blockage deeper in the system that needs professional attention.

F22 (Door Locked)

What it means: The door won’t unlock after a cycle completes. Safety interlocks are designed to keep the door sealed during active wash and spin cycles—but once the cycle finishes, the door should release within a few minutes. When it doesn’t, the door lock mechanism or its controlling electronics have usually failed.

Quick DIY check:

  • Confirm the cycle has fully completed. Attempting to open the door mid-cycle will trigger this error intentionally.
  • Wait 3 to 5 minutes after the cycle ends—some models require a brief cool-down before the lock releases.
  • Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. This resets the control board and may clear the lock.

F26 (Door Switch Error)

What it means: The door switch—which communicates to the control board whether the door is open or closed—has lost contact. Without confirmation that the door is secure, the washer won’t start at all.

  • Open the door and inspect the switch tab on the door frame. Is it bent, broken, or visibly loose?
  • Any physical damage to the switch means replacement is needed.

Bravos and Centennial Top-Load Specific Error Codes

UL (Unbalanced Load)

What it means: The laundry is distributed unevenly in the drum, creating excessive vibration during the spin cycle. To protect both the machine and your flooring, the washer halts and waits for you to redistribute the load before continuing.

Quick DIY check:

  • Stop the washer, open the lid, and rearrange large items—blankets, jeans, or heavy towels are frequent culprits.
  • Make sure nothing is wedged between the drum and the outer tub.
  • Close the lid and restart. If the UL code returns with a properly balanced load, the washer’s suspension system may be wearing out.

When to call us: Persistent UL errors with balanced loads, or noticeable vibration even with well-distributed clothes, point to worn suspension springs or dampers. Left unaddressed, deteriorating suspension can cause serious drum damage over time.

Ld (Slow Drain)

What it means: Water isn’t draining fast enough—the Bravos and Centennial equivalent of the F21 code on front-load models. The display shows “Ld” rather than “F21,” but the underlying cause and troubleshooting steps are identical.

Quick DIY check:

  • Follow the same steps listed under F21: inspect the drain hose for kinks, check for clogs, and clean the drain pump filter if your model has one accessible from the outside.
  • On top-load models, also check that the fill tube—which carries water down from the top—isn’t clogged, as blockages here can sometimes affect overall water flow through the system.

When to call us: If the hose and filter are clear and draining is still sluggish, the drain pump or internal plumbing requires professional diagnosis.

Sd (Suds Detected)

What it means: Too much soap in the load—the Bravos and Centennial equivalent of the F0E2 code. The display reads “Sd” on these models, but the cause and fix are the same.

Quick DIY check:

  • Open the lid and check for excessive bubbles or foam.
  • If you see foam, stop the cycle and run a rinse cycle without any detergent.
  • Scale back your detergent amount significantly. For both high-efficiency and standard top-load washers, 1 to 2 tablespoons is typically sufficient for a large load.
  • Use fabric softener sparingly, or switch to dryer sheets—liquid softener added at the wrong time can generate the suds the washer detects.

When to call us: If the code continues after rinsing and reducing detergent, the suds sensor may need to be replaced.
