The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is Ontario’s regulatory body for gas fitter licensing. Under provincial law, any work involving gas lines, gas appliances, or gas connections — repair, installation, or routine maintenance — must be performed by a technician who holds a valid TSSA certificate of competency. This is not optional, and it is not a formality.
Hiring an unlicensed technician for gas work is illegal in Ontario. Beyond the legal exposure, it can void your homeowner’s insurance policy if an incident occurs. A TSSA-certified technician has passed rigorous exams and completed structured training covering gas safety codes, proper installation practices, and accurate diagnosis of gas system faults. - Burner won’t ignite: You press the igniter and hear rapid clicking — or nothing at all. The most common cause is a failed igniter electrode or spark module.
- Oven heats unevenly: Food on the top rack overcooks while the bottom stays underdone, or hot spots make consistent baking impossible. This typically points to a failing bake igniter or a partially blocked burner.
- Gas odour near the appliance: A faint chemical smell after ignition is normal — it’s the odorant added to natural gas so you can detect it. A strong or persistent smell is not normal and needs immediate attention.
- Dryer takes too long to dry: Clothes are still damp after a full cycle. While a clogged vent is often responsible, a failing gas burner or valve can produce identical symptoms.
- Igniter clicks continuously after lighting: The burner lights, but the igniter keeps sparking. This wastes gas, wears out components faster, and usually signals a faulty ignition switch or moisture in the burner well.
- Pilot light repeatedly goes out: On older water heaters or gas fireplaces, a pilot that won’t stay lit almost always traces back to a worn thermocouple or a failing gas valve.
- Oven temperature significantly off: Your oven displays 350°F, but your oven thermometer reads 390°F. Temperature drift this wide usually involves a faulty gas valve, a degraded bake igniter, or a control board issue.

Gas Safety: What to Do If You Smell Gas
Natural gas is odourless and colourless on its own. Ontario utility providers add a sulphur-like chemical odorant specifically so occupants can detect leaks before they become dangerous. If that smell appears in your home, treat it seriously every time.
Follow these steps immediately if you detect a gas smell:
- Do not operate any electrical switches, appliances, or open flames. A single spark is enough to ignite accumulated gas.
- Leave your home immediately. Do not stop to investigate the source.
- From a safe location — outside, or from a neighbour’s phone — call Enbridge Gas at 1-877-362-7434. They will dispatch an emergency gas technician to locate and address the source of the leak.
- Once Enbridge has confirmed the gas supply is safe, call us at (647) 977-2626 to schedule repair of the faulty appliance.
Never assume a gas odour will clear on its own or that a small leak is harmless. Enbridge must assess the situation before any appliance work begins. Once they’ve given the all-clear, we’ll diagnose and repair the affected appliance promptly.
